Culture, Architecture and Film History

Ealing combines significant architecture, film history and extensive parkland with specific experiences for different daily itineraries. Pitzhanger Manor is at the centre of its cultural history: the building is listed as a Grade I building and was designed in 1800 by architect John Soane. It was completed in 1804 as the residence of Sir John Soane. Pitzhanger Gallery hosts significant exhibitions by contemporary artists and designers.

Another defining address is Ealing Studios. The film production studio has been in continuous operation since 1902. The listed sound stages opened in 1931. They illustrate the development of sound studios and are protected because of their historical significance. Ealing therefore has both a single building with a clear architectural identity and a continuing film studio, representing two different forms of cultural heritage.

Ealing Common London Regional Transport Underground Station is also architecturally notable. Charles Holden built it in 1931. It is one of only two examples of a transitional form of Underground architecture between the classical style of stations from the 1920s and the later Scandinavian- or Dutch-inspired models.

Parks, Paths and Summer Events

For a break in the open air, Walpole Park offers several clearly identified features: a playground, a café, accessible toilets, Regency-style flower beds, panels with historical and wildlife information, a fishpond with a fountain, and the Serpentine Lake. The park was officially opened to the public in 1901, is an important recreational area in the borough and serves as the venue for the Ealing Summer Festival.

The annual Ealing Summer programme includes numerous summer events, including a carnival as well as comedy, opera, world music, blues and jazz festivals. Those looking for a quieter route can use the circular path through Ealing Common. It leads twice around the avenues of horse chestnut trees lining the Common. Ealing Common was registered as a historic common in 1965.

Other parklands offer different features. Pitshanger Park provides opportunities to observe wildlife and walk along the River Brent. Lammas Park is a 25-acre formal park. This means that formal gardens, bodies of water, wildlife and riverside paths can be explored in Ealing as different park themes, without reducing them to a single type of landscape.

Market and Easy Stopover

The Ealing Farmers Market takes place every Saturday in West Ealing, complementing the cultural and park themes with a regular market visit. For a stay in the vicinity of Pitzhanger, the Bella Puglia Café is also relevant: it is accessible to everyone without an admission ticket.
